SHORES MDS

SHORES MDS is an industrial measurement organization that was founded in 2010 after the 2009 financial crisis. It was during this period when downstream operators were searching for ways to reduce project costs and increase execution efficiencies.

Dimensional control industrial measurement was then a staple in the execution of offshore both maintenance and construction projects when accuracy is imperative due to the implications involved an unsuccessful fit up however it was never then recognized as a way in which downstream operators could save money and improve quality.

SHORES MDS founded in California soon changed this belief and has since taken the technology to facilities across the us, successfully executing all sizes and complexity of projects.

Spool Inspection

SHORES MDS utilizes the most advanced pipe spool measurement system (automet)that will ensure that your fabrication shop will be top of any vendors list. Using the SHORES MDS system no spool will be delivered to your client without an electronically generated QC report that will confirm that the correct flanges have been fitted and that the spool has been built within the specification set by the client.

The advantages of using the automet system includes:

  • Immediate turn around of results
  • Electronically generated QC report
  • ±1/16” Repeatable accuracy
  • Performs a best fit routine to compare against design drawing
  • Evidence of acceptability in the case of any bolt up disputes.
  • Client confidence of commitment to quality
  • Simple to use

The survey system that ODS utilize has been relied upon in fabrication shops for over 10 years. It is recognized as the premier software for examining spools.

The system may be utilized as a fabrication tool to aid in the assembly of spools. Ways of how the system can assist in the fabrication of spools are:

  • Pre-weld fit up surveys.
  • Cutline survey
  • Layout survey
  • Alignment surveys

Spool Inspection

Case Study #1

A complex spool was delivered offshore from the fabrication shop. This spool is reported to have been fabricated out-with specification and has been modified to fit offshore at the fabrication shops expense.

QC Method

Fabrication Shop 1

Measured the spool using a tape measure to check that the dimensions were correct. Recorded dimensions are written on the fabrication isometric. This will be submitted as part of the QC package

Fabrication Shop 2

Used the ODS system to electronically measure the face-to-face dimensions. The system performed a best-fit routine, producing an electronic acceptance report.

Solution

Fabrication Shop 1

The QC department sent a copy of their marked up drawing to the client who in turn informs them that the site measurements taken on the spool do not match what they were reporting. The fabrication shop is held accountable for the costs of repairing the spool.

Fabrication Shop 2

The QC department was able to produce a certificate of compliance that was electronically generated based upon the dimensions that was shown on the isometric and the actual spool measurements. The client reviews this and accepts that the reason for the spool not fitting was a design/drawing error.

Summary

Fabrication Shop 2 maintains its quality confidence with the client. The client is impressed that they have invested and are committed to quality. All future work is awarded to this fabrication shop.
