The dimensional control plan shall identify hold points which shall prevent expensive rework and project delays if not executed correctly.

Do I need to erect scaffolding to enable points to be surveyed?

No, scaffolding causes issues due to blocking the line of site between the survey instrument and point that is to be surveyed. Points can be surveyed using a touchless laser with no human contact. If you can see it, you can measure it.

Laser scanning has been a buzz word in the industry for several years, but few people truly understand its limitations. Laser scanning is something that should only be used on project where a large amount of data is to be collected, the work scope is unclear, and a large corridor of information is needed to be collected on a single site visit or the preferred deliverable is only a point cloud.

The system is written for this type of project. During the survey the system will:

• Confirm flange diameter and rating
• Report tie point locations, flange face deviances and bolt hole rotations. These reports are auto generated and do not require an operator to use a CAD package to get this information
• Model piping routing and support locations

Dimensional control requires a line of site to get a measurement. If the tie point is covered then no measurement is possible. Insulation only requires to be removed at tie points. No insulation is to be removed at fitting locations.
